Wrapped in Courage

Wrapped in Courage

Femicide rates are on the rise in Ontario, with over 49 femicides in Ontario since November 26th, 2023. For over a decade, the Wrapped in Courage Campaign (organized by the Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses) has been growing awareness of gender-based violence across Ontario through purple scarves.

2024 Wrapped in Courage Campaign

These scarves carry powerful meanings for everyone who wears them. During Woman Abuse Prevention Month and the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, many don a purple scarf to demonstrate their support for local services combating GBV. Others wear them as a signal to survivors that they are believed, valued, and never alone. For some, the scarf serves as a poignant reminder of those lost to femicide, reinforcing their commitment to creating change.

Join us in this movement! Wear a purple scarf and stand in solidarity with survivors and advocates. Together, we can raise awareness and make a lasting impact. Let your voice be heard—show your support today!

Armagh and Embrave launch 2024 Wrapped in Courage Campaign-“Threads of Action to End Gender-Based Violence”

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday November 1st, 2024
This November during Woman Abuse Prevention Month, Armagh and Embrave: Agency to End Violence is calling on all Peel Region community members to take action to respond to high rates of femicide and other forms of gender-based violence (GBV). Across Ontario, communities are coming together to support this year’s Wrapped in Courage Campaign throughout November under the theme “Threads of Action to End Gender-Based Violence”. We each hold the threads to weave us towards awareness and safety for survivors. Change is Created.
Armagh and Embrave are not-for-profit organizations providing vital services and support to survivors of GBV in our community and are proud agency partners of the 2024 Wrapped in Courage campaign that has been raising awareness of gender-based violence and working to prevent femicide in Ontario since 2013. Armagh and Embrave are concerned about the high rates of femicide and other forms of gender-based violence across Ontario, with over      49 femicides reported by the Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses (OAITH) since November 2023. Last year in Ontario, on average every 6 days a woman or child lost their lives due to men’s violence.  In 2023 The Region of Peel and The City of Brampton declared gender-based violence an epidemic. These femicides are preventable tragedies which devastate communities and families.
Throughout November, communities across Ontario will be coming together to show their support for GBV survivors, their children, and the services that provide resources and safety through Wrapped in Courage flag raisings and proclamations.  A Wrapped in Courage flag will be raised in the Brampton community at the Community Flagpole located at Ken Whillans Square outside Brampton City Hall on November 22, at 9:00 AM and a Proclamation will be declared by Mayor Patrick Brown of the City of Brampton on November 20th at 9:30 AM during the Brampton City Council meeting declaring November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Wrapped in Courage purple scarves and flags are symbols of the courage needed by communities in supporting survivors of violence and ending the epidemic of intimate partner violence, GBV and femicide across Ontario. They signal not only a commitment to ending hate-fuelled violence but letting survivors in our community know they are not alone.
